Course Philosophy

On the Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course, we make it our priority to have a very low student-teacher ratio of approximately 2 ½ students to each teacher, to allow for in-depth, detailed and fully tailored feedback on the language combination(s) of your choice.

Our aim over these two weeks is to make participants better, happier and more confident interpreters under whatever (often unforeseen, inevitably) circumstances may arise.

To that end, we feel it is counterproductive systematically to present participants well ahead of time with the texts or exact content of speeches that would enable them to study and prepare each unfamiliar word and concept. This is not pedagogically desirable, in that it distorts the speaker/interpreter relationship and modifies the interpreting dynamic.

While it is understandable that each student seek to appear in the best possible light, the aim of the Course is to demonstrate to teaching faculty how each participant ‘manages his/her incompetence’, when outside the sought-after comfort zone. For these reasons, the difficulty of topics and the availability of any speech texts are managed in such a way as to remain realistic, while pushing students far enough to reveal their strengths and weaknesses. Teachers can thus tailor comments and advice as a function of intrinsic student ability, without the masking effect of minute preparatory work.

Our philosophy consists of presenting topics that could realistically arise (and in every case have arisen!) in international conferences, in conditions which are equally realistic. The combination of themes employed covers virtually the entire spectrum of interpreting challenges.

We consider that, as professional interpreters with a minimum amount of experience, you are already familiar with the main international issues of the day, and possess a wide lexicon covering, and sound knowledge of, all the primary disciplines.

The CCIC aims primarily not to teach vocabulary or language skills, but rather high-quality, dynamic and thinking conference interpretation. Many years of experience ensures that there is indeed “method in our madness”.


The Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course is not an interpreting school, and students are expected to be capable of working at a professional level.
